Grilled Cheese Sandwiches – Creative and Easy Recipe Ideas

Grilled cheese sandwiches are a classic and simple recipe, especially pleasant in the fall and winter months. All you need is a tasty bowl of soup and your comfort food delivers what you needed all day. Chances are, you grew up eating them and it reminds you of home. Typically, most people make their grilled cheese sandwiches with bread and cheese. While this is a delicious and irresistible combination, it is only the beginning.

The Basics – Every grilled cheese sandwich starts of with 2 slices of bread and cheese. Try coating the outside of each bread slice with margarine spread before cooking. If you don’t have margarine on hand, or prefer a slightly tangy taste, you can put mayonnaise on the outside of the bread slices, as well. After you butter (or mayo) the bread, you then stack 2 or 3 slices of cheese in the middle. A large non-stick skillet works best. Put about 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt over medium-high heat. Make sure the butter and pan are heated, then turn the burner down to medium. We want the cheese inside to fully melt without burning the bread.

Bread and Cheese – Mix it up with different types of bread and cheese. If you are used to whole wheat bread with american sliced cheese, try sourdough or texas toast bread with mozzarella and cheddar cheese instead. It also helps to shred the cheese first so it melts faster and avoid burning the other ingredients. You can also mix different types of cheese easily this way.

Meat – Try adding some pre-cut deli meat such as turkey or ham. If you have leftover chicken or pork, add that to the sandwich as well. Bacon is always a great choice to add also. It adds a crunchy texture a kick of salt.

Vegetables or Fruit – Sauté spinach, onions or bell peppers and add them to your delightful sandwich. Sliced tomatoes and lettuce also work well. Use sliced pineapple with ham and cheddar cheese for a Hawaiian style sandwich. Even cucumbers are a great addition to your grilled cheese sandwich. Make sure whatever you add is in-between cheese so it doesn’t slide out.

Spreads, Spices and Sauces – With so many spices out there, it only makes sense to use them in your favorite comfort food recipe. Salt and pepper are excellent choices. Take it up a notch with some fresh basil or give it a little kick with some hot sauce. Use spaghetti sauce as a spread on the inside of the bread slices and pair it with mozzarella cheese and sautéed spinach for an Italian style grilled cheese sandwich.
